Overkill Audio Finale

Hei! Selger mine Overkill Audio Finale!

FINALE There has been a great deal of R&D invested in the material science, construction techniques, shape and finishing of the Prey.

We are delighted with both the sonic and aesthetic results, proving to be vastly superior to the more commonly used casting or injection moulding techniques.

We do not view a loudspeaker cabinet as a passive box.

Regardless of its material & construction techniques, a loudspeaker cabinet must be viewed as an active component which is equally important to the overall sound as the driver and crossover.

The cabinet is an active energy conversion system, its job is to contain and convert energy, it must deal with the sonic back wave produced by the drivers it houses.

Remember that the back wave disappearing into the cabinet is just as loud as the sound flowing into your room! Our goal was to create a beautiful looking, acoustically inert loudspeaker cabinet to house our rewired Manger drivers.

We used creative engineering solutions to convert the kinetic (sound waves) energy of the back wave into heat energy by utilising proprietary viscoelastic materials and techniques.

We have achieved our design goals in great style! MDF, ply wood, hard wood, phenolic resin or plastic simply can not approach the energy conversion characteristics of our unique 16 layer Self Damping Compound (SDC).

The combination of skilled craftsman, 40 hours of labour, natural and synthetic materials results in an unequalled performance that forms the cornerstone of all Overkill Audio loudspeakers.

In acoustics the most important law of physics is, "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction", so for all the musical sound you hear filling your listening room there is exactly the same amount of sound energy bouncing around inside the speaker cabinet! How can you convert this sound into heat before it bounces back out through the driver diaphragm out of phase!? The only answer is?.

two Prey! We tried the conventional solution of stuffing the box full of various sound deadening and absorbing materials, this simply killed all the dynamics and life in the music.

?Baby and bathwater? spring to mind! We gave a demonstration to an extreme (cost no object) DIY speaker builder who spent over £3,000 on finishing and CNC machining two large solid Mahogany "eggs" to house his Manger drivers.

When he compared them with the Overkill SDC Prey he ?demoted? his mahogany eggs to rear speaker duty and bought a pair of Prey as his new two channel stereo reference.

"I found the sound of these drivers thoroughly beguiling.

They show marvelous mid-to-treble delicacy, focus and coherence and possibly the most natural voice-band presence I've encountered, with quite exceptional fingers-up-the-spine realism." - Paul Messenger, HiFi Choice, 2005 Previous commercial designs (Audio Physics Medea and Mangers Zero box 103) used the drivers with passive crossovers and shallow slopes of 12dB per octave to 24dB per octave.

They also crossed over very low i.e.

150Hz to 180Hz.

We have taken advantage (with a huge 15 fold increase in crossover cost!) of the advances in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and we now use linear phase (not Butterworth or Linkwitz Riley) crossovers at 300Hz..

Our DSP based crossovers has three major benefits.

First a massive decrease in distortion as the driver is now completely free of all the X-max consuming "hard work" below 300Hz.

Second a massive increase in power handling and dynamics as all the power band below 300Hz is now handled by ultra fast custom designed 10 inch and 12 inch drivers perfectly suited for active amplification.

Thirdly the mid and high frequencies now soar and blossom as never before.

This simply was not possible when the driver was forced to handle all the power down to 100Hz.

Please remember that in reality, a typical 12dB per octave passive crossover at 180Hz, still allows over 50% of the current and voltage to pass straight through at 100Hz! Our DSP also has the major advantage of full real time EQ and room correction which allows us to tailor every system to both the listening environment and sonic preferences of our clients.

The Prey are designed with flexibility in mind, using our 96dB linear phase crossover, they can be crossed over as low as 250Hz.

We recommend 300Hz as the best all round choice for most situations with the option of 350Hz or even 400Hz for SPL?s up to 118dB! The timeless teardrop shape sits perfectly on its polished alloy stand, looking equally at home in an art gallery as in any listening room or home cinema.

The classically curved Encore bass / low midrange cabinet with its sumptuous real wood veneer and piano black gloss makes a heavenly combination with the Prey.

The cool and contemporary Angels & Dark Angels featuring acrylic and Corian make a truly iconic 21st century design statement.

The Prey are the crowning glory on the Finale speaker system and here they really do command respect both visually and sonically.

This is as good as it gets.

Maximum diameter 335mm.

Depth 450mm The Predator is a ground breaking (literally!) sub woofer which can be crossed over as high as 350Hz and still maintain its composure.

The Predator is unique in three ways; First it has unequalled all round bass performance i.e.

texture & detail plus power and depth.

Second it has incredible speed (rise time and settling time) similar to that of a top class ATC dome midrange unit.

Thirdly its power handling is a colossal 1,000 watts.

It?s the combination of speed and power that enables the Predator to create a sonically invisible join with the Prey.

The patented 12? Predator driver is brilliant piece of engineering and innovative thinking.

It features a unique twin cone construction consisting of an external 12? cone and an internal rear facing 10?cone which are connected with a carbon fibre piston rod attached at the centre of each cone.

This rod is 13? long has twin 3?voice coils suspended in two powerful neodymium magnetic fields attached at the other end .Utilising the internal rear facing 10 ? driver as an air brake or more accurately an aerodynamic balancing device, it uniquely solves the single biggest design flaw present in all cone and dome pistonic drivers.

A conventional cone has a very high air resistance when pumping out of the cabinet and 35% to 85% lower (depending on cone profile) air resistance when pumping back in to the cabinet.

Just imagine holding a 12? bass cone out of a car window at 100 miles per hour.

Imagine the huge (arm breaking!) force when it is front facing then reduce that force by 35% to 85%! Now imagine that huge force imbalance happening 20 to 300 times a second (20 to 300 Hz or happenings per second) and you start to get an idea of the magnitude of the problem! This massive energy imbalance is simply and conveniently overlooked by all speaker manufacturers claiming to have pistonic, low distortion linear bass systems.

Its simple laws of aerodynamics and physics! The predator does not need any reflex ports or ABR?s and therefore avoids the classic failing of front facing reflex ports commonly used by many manufacturers.

Let?s take a very brief look at the basic physics of reflex ported or auxiliary bass radiator equipped loudspeaker.

When the main loudspeaker driver pumps out of the cabinet it is compressing the air to send you a musical (hopefully!) signal.

When the driver pumps back into the cabinet it is rarerefing the air to send you another signal.

So what happens to the air in the port or the diaphragm of the ABR? The answer is simple, the air in the port or ABR diaphragm moves 180 degrees out of phase with the main loudspeaker driver! When ever the main driver pumps out to send you that deep bass kick drum compression, the front facing ports or ABR?s are sending you a simultaneous out of phase rarefraction to ruin the moment! It is of course possible to utilise the out of phase energy from ports or ABR?s in a positive way, but never front facing! Even transmission lines which have (or should have!) carefully calculated time delays based on half, quarter or eighth wavelengths, should not vent to the front.

Mixing in phase and out of phase or delayed energy is not impossible, but it does require some care and attention to basic design principals.

Please ask any manufacturer who sells speakers with front facing ports or ABR?s (especially wall mounted speakers) to explain why! Front facing ports and ABR?s rank up there with claims that there is such a thing as a linear phase passive crossover, the Emperors new clothes and rocking horse droppings! The Predator cabinets are made from a Corian like synthetic stone and resin compound which is available in over 100 colours and shades.

As always, with Overkill, the finish is beautiful and highly durable.

What can we say about the Finale without using too many cliché?s and hyperbole? They are our flagship design and we are immensely proud of them.

There, now you can go straight to the specifications! For those who want to read more please enjoy the following.

Point source is universally acknowledged as the ?holy grail? of loudspeaker design and, from 300Hz up, we are already home and dry with the Prey.

So for our Finale we concentrated on the ultimate performance below 300Hz.

The Predator subwoofers are the undisputed, undefeated ?king of the hill? below 100 Hz so by a process of elimination we only needed to address the narrow, but crucial, 100Hz to 300Hz band.

We needed blinding speed to keep up with the 13Us rise and settling time of the Prey so our unique open baffle design was the obvious choice right out of the gate.

We also needed a single 10? point source driver (instead of the Angels twin 8? drivers ) per cabinet, capable of handling the critical 100Hz to 300Hz power band.

For most vocals and many instruments this power band is ?make or break? and the Angels set the bar so high we had to come up with something really special.

Well we have, a proprietary 10? driver with a massive 8Kg symmetrical field magnet surrounding a 75mm (3 inch) voice coil and a customised Bl to Mms ratio of 3.25.

After nearly a year of R&D blending and balancing the electrical & mechanical properties of the driver with the varying curvature & dimensions of our open baffle sides we finally (Finale ?!) hit the mark.

The low midrange driver cabinet is truly overkill engineering, despite compact dimensions of 420mm tall, 400mm wide and 550mm deep we use 30mm Corian for the front baffle and 25mm for all the other panels.

A compact open baffle bass / low mid cabinet weighing 42Kg! Massively ridged and totally inert this cabinet locks down onto the top of the Predator subwoofer using custom Sistrum technology mounting hardware.

Imagine Mike Tyson sitting on Arnold Schwarzenegger?s shoulders?.! On top of the low midrange cabinet we have the Prey, enough said.
